Pottermore, PoA Chapter 22 (what I’ve found so far…)

DISCLAIMER: This is not exactly a live blog and it’s definitely not a Finder’s Guide. It’s what I’ve found so far. Judging by the new completion bar, I do appear to missing items from both scenes. :(

Here’s what I’ve found so far (DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED!)…

CHAPTER 20: THE DEMENTOR’S KISS

Scene 1 (“Full Moon”)

  • Zoom 1:
    • UNLOCK “Werewolves” (JKR-exclusive content). This is fascinating content and well-worth reading – particularly the bits about the Ministry’s various werewolf offices and what happens when werewolves mate in werewolf form.
    • Hover cursor to make manacles jump.
    • COLLECT Dittany.
  • Zoom 2:
    • Use cursor to make Were-Lupin and Animagus-Sirius bite at each other’s muzzles and snarl even louder.

    • COLLECT Monkshood. (I guess we’re making the Draught of Living Death!)

Scene 2 (“The Lake Shore”)

  • Zoom 1:
    • Harry faces off with the Dementors. Nothing to do here.
  • Zoom 2:
    • COLLECT Tubeworms
    • COLLECT Spine of Lionfish

CHAPTER 19: THE SERVANT OF LORD VOLDEMORT

Scene 1 (“Peter’s Transformation”)

  • Zoom 1:
    • Hold Scabbers in the air and listen to him squeal.
  • Zoom 2:
    • When you double click, Scabbers turns into Wormtail (and man, he looks older than his 33/34 years!)
    • COLLECT scarab beetle bodies from the plaster heap in back of Wormtail, on the Sirius side.
    • COLLECT bat wings from the wall where the plaster is falling
    • COLLECT spider legs from the plaster heap on the Lupin side of Wormtail.

Here’s what I’ve found (DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED!)…

CHAPTER 18: MOONY, WORMTAIL, PADFOOT AND PRONGS

Scene 1 (“Lupin’s Tale”)

  • Zoom 1:
    • Just a single zoom again. Nothing to collect. You can, however, listen to Lupin’s story about the Marauders transforming into Animagi. If you hover your cursor, you can also make Padfoot sniff in kind of a snarly way.
    • In the Comments, Let’s Call Me Lily adds: “You can also make them twitch their ears, wriggle Lupin’s snout and make Prongs shift on his feet.” To which I would reply: “Yeah, I know. And you can even make Wormtail appear! on Lupin’s far side. But what I DIDN’T know when I wrote up this chapter was that those mouse movements MATTERED for moving the completion bar!” Anyway, for those of you who wishing to complete the chapter, be sure to do the hover your cursor and interact with the Marauders in their Animagus and Werewolf forms. :)

Pottermore, PoA Chapter 17 (what I’ve found so far…)

DISCLAIMER: This is not exactly a live blog and it’s definitely not a Finder’s Guide. It’s what I’ve found so far. According to my magic new completion bar, though, I have found everything in this chapter!

So here’s what I found (DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED!)…

CHAPTER 17: CAT, RAT AND DOG

Scene 1 (“The Shadow of the Whomping Willow”)

This scene has only one zoom level, but the artwork is, again, wonderful. I think “great artwork” is going to be a recurring theme in talking about the new scenes.

  • Zoom 1:
    • Illuminate the scene by hovering cursor over Harry’s wand. Can see Ron disappearing into the Whomping Willow.
    • Click on the Invisibility Cloak between Harry and Hermione to make it disappear. (Thanks, Ritwik!).
    • Make Whomping Willow branches move with  your cursor.
    • From the roots of the Whomping Willow…
      • COLLECT Leaping Toadstool.
      • COLLECT Asphodel.
      • COLLECT Fluxweed

Scene 2 (“The Man in the Shadows”)

This scene takes us, for the first time ever, inside the Shrieking Shack. I think we’re going to be spending a few chapters here. :)

  • Zoom 1:
    • UNLOCK Secret Keeper (interesting that we click on Sirius to get this info).
    • Hover cursor to make candles glow brighter.
    • When cursor passes far wall, plaster and other building materials fall on the floor.
    • COLLECT black beetle eyes from the plaster heap on the floor.
    • COLLECT woodlice from the wall in back of the plaster heap.
    • COLLECT mushrooms from the side wall of the Shack.
    • Hover cursor over the middle of the bed at the top where the curtain parts to make a spider spin down. (Thanks, Let’s Call Me Lily!)

DISCLAIMER: This is not exactly a live blog and it’s definitely not a Finder’s Guide. It’s what I’ve found so far. There’s also probably some stuff I’m missing. :)

Here’s what I’ve found so far (DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED!)…

CHAPTER 16: PROFESSOR TRELAWNEY’S PREDICTION

Scene 1 (“Exam Time”)

Not long ago, I was challenged to write a fanfic using Lupin’s “Obstacle Course” concept. :) This makes it all the more exciting to see the beautiful Pottermore artwork for this scene. Still, I’m not getting everything right. The nifty new “completion bar” at the bottom of the scene tells me that I must have missed something. So I’m hoping you will help me find it.

  • Zoom 1:
    • With your cursor, you can make the Grindylow swim around its pool in the foreground.
    • COLLECT Knotgrass – at bass of the tank in which the Grindylow is swimming.
    • COLLECT Leeches – in the pool to the right of the Grindylow’s tank. (Thanks, Let’s Call Me Lily and Ritwik!)
  • Zoom 2:
    • The Red Caps are out in force! They will pop out of their holes with little prompting, but your cursor can help determine which ones pop out when.
    • COLLECT Horned Slugs – from the marshy area to the left back.
  • Zoom 3:
    • Your cursor can make the wispy Hinkypunk appear, holding his lantern to lead you astray.
    • COLLECT Fluxweed in the marshy area towards the back – by what I assume to be the boggart’s cabinet.

Okay, so now… I’m STILL missing something in this scene! (And yeah, I’ve had the Hinkypunk all along, so I’m not sure what I haven’t got or haven’t done).

Scene 2 (“The Committee”)

My completion bar is all the way full in this scene, so I know I found everything. This is actually one of the more disturbing scenes in PoA. I’m just glad Pottermore gave us plenty of activity to distract us… and that Hermione had her trusty Time Turner handy!

One thing that I learned as I went along with the new layout is that mouse movements (i.e., various actions) contribute as much to chapter completion as collecting things do. Since the old layout didn’t give us a completion bar, I didn’t realize this when I was first working with the completion bar in Chapter 16. At any rate, my completion bar for Scene 2 is full, but that doesn’t mean that I necessarily took note of everything necessary in order to make it full.

In the Comments, Ritwik asks: “in moment 2 how can your be filled when you didn’t shake the trees and let the crows fly and why didn’t you touch buckbeak’s ear”? And the truth is… I don’t know. I probably did all those things and didn’t say anything about them when I did them. So anyway, if your completion bar is not full in Scene 2, you might try shaking the trees to get the crows to fly and you might try touching Buckbeak’s ear. And actually, I do seem to vaguely recall doing those things when I first went through this scene!

  • Zoom 1:
    • COLLECT Tilly Toke Chocolate Frog Card. She saved Muggle lives when a dragon swooped down on a beach.
    • COLLECT Bertie Bott’s Aubergine-Flavoured Bean.
  • Zoom 2:
    • COLLECT Valerian Springs.
    • COLLECT Dried Nettles.
    • Make the door to Hagrid’s shack shake with your cursor.

Key to Zoom Levels:
I am using the conventions I’ve seen used elsewhere when discussing Pottermore zoom levels:

    • Zoom 2 = zoom in one level from Zoom 1.

    • Zoom OUT 2 = zoom out one level from Zoom 1.
    • Zoom OUT 3 = zoom out two levels from Zoom 1.

Battle of Hogwarts – 15th Anniversary

On May 2, 1998, the Battle of Hogwarts was fought. Each year, Expecto Patronum! honors all the brave men, women, Headmaster portraits, and magical creatures who helped in the fight against Lord Voldemort for the future of the Wizarding World, especially:

  • Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger – who stood beside Harry throughout his Quest and provided much-needed support during the Battle
  • Luna Lovegood – for keeping Dumbledore’s Army alive and helping Harry into Ravenclaw Tower
  • Neville Longbottom – for keeping Dumbledore’s Army alive and slaying Nagini
  • Ginny Weasley – for keeping Dumbledore’s Army alive and giving Harry inspiration
  • The Portrait of Phineas Nigellus Black – for locating Harry in the Forest of Dean
  • Severus Snape – for getting the Sword of Gryffindor to Harry in the Forest of Dean and for using his dying moments to offer the memories that would help Harry to defeat Lord Voldemort
  • The Portrait of Albus Dumbledore – for providing much-needed guidance to Headmaster Snape
  • Aberforth Dumbledore – for helping Harry, the Order, the DA, and many others get in to Hogwarts from the Hog’s Head and for then fighting in the Battle alongside many other citizens of Hogsmeade
  • The Members of the DA, the Order, the Gryffindor alumni, the Slytherins who returned with Slughorn, and the citizens of Hogsmeade – for standing up to fight
  • The Magical Creatures who fought – particularly Kreacher and the House Elves, the Centaurs of the Forbidden Forest, and Grawp
  • Minerva McGonnagall, Horace Slughorn, Filius Flitwick – for leadership during the Battle and for directly battling Voldemort
  • Molly Weasley – for destroying Bellatrix Lestrange
  • Hagrid – for being true of heart
  • Peeves and Trelawney – for their unique contributions

And now, we’d like to honor the fallen heroes:
