As I think everybody knows by now, I received my Pottermore Welcome Email on Friday morning. So I’ve been inside, “exploring the site” (as the Pottermore team likes to put it), for the past three days.
Since this post is mainly about my impressions and first-hand experience of Pottermore, I’m putting pretty much everything between spoiler GIFs for the sake of those who wish to experience everything on Pottermore fresh. :)
A few things you might want to know first, though…
In the Great Hall, there are currently 99,841 104,326 112,423 117,288 126,669 131,622 139,639 142,235 students.
I don’t think students start showing up in the statistics for the Great Hall until they arrive at Hogwarts and go through the Sorting Ceremony (PS/SS Chapter 7). So this means that at least significantly more than 100,000 welcome emails have already gone out and that about 14% of the early entry pool is now inside Pottermore.
According to the Pottermore Insider from several days ago, Pottermore is going to be sending out more and more letters this week… and then take a pause. This means that we could see a large increase over the next few days. And that’s good news for anyone who is still waiting.
Now… on to those first impressions…
Pottermore is being branded as an interactive reading experience, but I think it’s really more of a combination of a lot of different types of experiences.
Moments
Currently, the site has “moments” from PS/SS. We see drawings of various memorable scenes from the book, and in many of these “moments” we are able to “collect” items or “unlock” reading material. To collect or unlock, we just need to move the mouse around until something highlights and then we click on the thing that highlights. Items I’ve “collected” include a number of potions ingredients, Chocolate Frog Cards, and even a few Galleons. It’s amazing how much junk students just leave lying around the castle!
Occasionally, you have to accomplish a task in order to advance. For example, you can’t visit the shops in Diagon Alley to buy your school items (and get your wand!) until you find and collect your shopping list. You can’t move past Fluffy if you never cast the Alohomora spell to open the door to get to Fluffy. You can’t get past Quidditch until you catch the Golden Snitch. You can’t move into the final chamber until you’ve solved Snape’s Logic Puzzle.
This is all a lot of fun. In fact, it’s a bit like JKR’s own website but with a bit more narrative structure… and without the sound. At the moment, Pottermore is dead silent.
BTW, the artwork is often drop-dead gorgeous. :)
The Reading Experience
The reading experience is Pottermore is at its best – and at its worst. The worst is the repetitive canned content. Basically, every moment comes attached with a list of Characters and Places (and possibly Objects, Spells, and Creatures) that you can read about. Unfortunately, most of these are brief, uninformative, and repetitive. You really only need to read about the secondary characters one time because their information never expands. (I’m looking at you Gregory Goyle and Vincent Crabbe, Quidditch Team Members, and Argus Filch!).
For major characters like the Trio, Dumbledore, Snape, McGonnagall, Draco, Hagrid, and Quirrell, you never really know until you click if you are going to get new content. Sometimes you do. Most of the time you don’t. I eventually got so tired of clicking on the exact same content that I finally ended up making all of the major characters “Favorites.” That way, I am, in effect, “collecting” their information for later reading.
In order to avoid reader frustration, I personally think Pottermore needs to create some sort of icon to indicate new information that hasn’t appeared before. That way, the reader won’t have to click unless that icon appears. Right now, Pottermore does have a feather icon to indicate new JKR-exclusive content. But an additional icon for previously unread info about one of the characters could only help the experience.
Hmmm. I think I’ll mention that on the feedback form. ;)
The New JKR Content
That said, the new and exclusive JKR content is AMAZING! For McGonnagall and Quirrell, you get a lot of new and exciting – and often heartbreaking – information.
You unlock new JKR content about McGonnagall for the first time in Chapter 7 and for Quirrell in (I believe) Chapter 8. Much later, JKR provides even more information for each character.
Pottermore doesn’t just offer new JKR info on characters, though. We get a lot of wandlore, straight from Ollivander himself (and I know how interested everybody is in getting, and learning about, their wand). And of course, we do get those House Histories.
But to tell you the truth, some of the funniest new content comes in the most mundane packages. Do you think you want to unlock content with names like “Measurements” and “Clothing”?
No?
Well, trust me, you do. :)
Wand Selection and Sorting
You probably already know that you get quizzed in order to select your wand and your House. Your wand selects you in Chapter 5, and the Sorting Hat places you into your Hogwarts House in Chapter 7.
After reading about wand woods and cores, most people I know have concluded that they were chosen by the correct wand. Sorting is another matter entirely. I have some friends who identified heavily with Slytherin but were sorted into Ravenclaw. Others of us identified more with Ravenclaw but were sorted into Slytherin.
I don’t think this is really a problem with the Sorting Hat. I think it’s more a problem with what the fandom thinks Ravenclaw and Slytherin are. The popular views of Ravenclaw and Slytherin are not exactly what we see in the actual House Histories. But more on that in another post.
Regardless of what you think you are, the Sorting Hat will never admit a mistake, so this is your one chance to be sorted. And JKR stands behind her pool of questions.
As far as I can tell, you will get the same wand questionnaire I got. You will not get the same Sorting questions. From what I have gathered, Pottermore has a database full of Sorting questions, and each question will be triggered by the previous answer. This is aimed at making each Sorting experience unique.
Earning House Points
You earn points for your House by brewing potions and engaging in Wizard Duels. Even though Duels are down right now, Potions are brewing all across Pottermore!
Casting spells and brewing Potions are both very fun. But man! Potions really requires precision. If you’re not precise, you will quickly find yourself doing a Neville Longbottom… and melting or exploding your cauldron!
I think I’ve melted about 7 cauldrons so far – most of them just during practice, so no worries. But the last cauldron I melted lost my House points… and it was a relatively expensive Copper cauldron. So the lesson? Stick to the pewter. ;)
Well, anyway, I think you can tell that I’m having fun. The site is not nearly as buggy as I expected. And now that I’ve gone through all the moments, there’s still competition for the House Cup to keep me busy. Plus, I have 6 5 4 3 2 Chocolate Frog Cards to find!
(I have now completed the Chocolate Card set… and the last card I found was Merlin’s!)
With that, I’ll just say that if you have questions about Pottermore, I’ll take them in the Comments thread. :)

pottermore really should start sending out more mails SOON! your post is brilliant and i am green with envy! its really nice to let others( who are yet to get in )know that pottermore is worth the hype.. i really really want to get in soon and see for myself!! till then keep posting!! :)
They have sent out more emails today. Hope you get yours soon!
No email for me today.. do you know for how long will they be sending more emails before the next break?
No, sorry. I don’t know any details other than what I read on the Pottermore Insider site. :(
They did apparently send out emails today, even though they didn’t announce it.
Thanks for the update, even though the huge bit between the Spoiler gifs I didn’t read :o) Hopefully I will get in in the next couple of days, all my local Pottermore pals are already in! So I’m all by my lonesome in my local #NoOwlParty >.>
You’re welcome for the update. Your owl should come soon… let’s hope. :)
I thought that I would post here as I wanted to say that I have had a very smooth Pottermore experience. I haven’t anywhere near the amount of problems as other people and one ‘problem’ even worked in my favour, I some how got 2 house points instead of one for a potion that went (not intentionally) wrong. The other I saw just the once on the very first day, I was in the first batch of e-mails, one of my moments was in French. However this seems to have been solved very quickly by the Pottermore team and I haven’t heard of anybody else coming across this problem since .
I haven’t been stuck in the ‘potion loop’ or had a cauldron explode. I will confess to not actually have tried duelling though so I can’t comment on that one. I also haven’t lost my profile, common room, Great Hall or friends list.
So, in short, I wanted to let people know that yes there are some problems in the site but not everybody seems to be running into all the problems that have been listed by people who are currently using Pottermore. I’ve probably jinxed myself watch now as my entire content goes for a walk and my cauldron explodes! :)
Thanks for commenting!
I keep exploding cauldrons! But I think most of it is my own incompetence rather than a bug on the site! I really need to take some Potions lessons from the people in my House who are good at it! :)
I also had a potion disappear this morning. I set it to brew, and when I came back it wasn’t brewing. No points lost. No cauldron exploded. No loss of ingredients. Just nothing. I guess that’s better than melting a cauldron, but it was disheartening because I wanted to win back the points I’d lost with my last failed attempt at a potion.
And actually, that failed attempt was really my first “blame Pottermore” failure. Nothing was working right. I couldn’t ground my ingredients. I couldn’t pick them up to place in the cauldron. I couldn’t pick up my wand. So really, yeah, I’d have to say that one was a glitch and not me being deeply horrible at potions.
I’m pretty good at casting spells, so I think I’ll do better at dueling when the dueling returns. But it’s still kind of embarrassing to be in Slytherin and not be a master at potions! :)
Hi,
could i invite you to write a short write up on my website ?
Sure. Just let me know what you need. :)
i haven’t gotten my potteremail which lets me into the sight and i registered on the fourth day. i got my confoation and welcome email though. :(
It seems that right now, most of the people inside are from Day 1 and Day 2. It may take awhile for Day 4. I’m looking forward to Day 4 getting in, though, because my sister is Day 4 and so is one of my friends.
I hope you guys get your emails soon!
The Pottermore topic I am curious about is the Sorting. I am hoping my assorted online friends will have some recollection of how they wound up in their Houses, because I want to know how it works. I will have a few chances of my own to see, of course, since I plan to let my sons check out the site in October (if they agree to give reading PS/SS a try. BRIBES. Yes, they work.)
Hi Z –
I know exactly how I got into my House. (I wrote down the questions and my answers!). However, I think the wand selection process may be part of it. My wand wood, I think, was clearly moving me in the direction of Slytherin.
Anyway, here’s a general sense of my questions and answers…
Given a choice between The Wise, the Bold, the Good, the Great, I chose The Wise.
Given a choice between several different scenes in an enchanted garden, I was most attracted to a luminous pool.
If a troll broke loose in the Headmaster’s Study, the first thing I would rescue would be an ancient book of runes thought to belong to Merlin (and yes, I knew Merlin was a Slytherin, but that did not affect my answer)
Given a choice of different supernatural creatures, the one I was most likely to want to study was merpeople. This was the toughest question, actually. But I answered it from within the Potterverse, not from within my general conceptions of some of the other creatures (largely from the horror genre).
Given a choice of roads, I would have chosen the narrow, dark alley lit by lanterns.
Given a choice of dusk or dawn, I would choose dusk.
Given a choice of left or right, I would choose left.
And yes. Those were honest answers.
Based on those final questions, I was not surprised when the Sorting Hat told me I was a “Slytherin.”
I can’t do that spoiler gif thing so I’m going to write SPOILER in capitals!
SPOILER
That’s interesting with the last two questions as I got them too and answered the same as you did and got Hufflepuff. The others were about choosing between 3 paths and another was about choosing a goblet based on it’s content sadly I can’t remember the others. So is it that dusk/left go towards Hufflepuff/Slytherin and dawn/right lead towards Gryffindor/Ravenclaw?
I’m also beginning to think that the wands are apart of the sorting as my wand by Ollivander’s descriptions of wood and core shout Hufflepuff.
Actually, you can find the code for the spoiler GIFs at the very bottom of this post. All you need to do is copy/paste the code in to the comments area, and you’re good to go! :)
Very interesting that you answered those final questions the same way and got Hufflepuff. I’m not sure it’s as simple, though, as “left” is Hufflepuff/Slytherin and “right” is Gryffindor/Ravenclaw. I would bet that it’s contextual – i.e., right and left depends on what you’re being measured against at that point in the sorting test.
By that point, the questions have probably eliminated a couple of houses. So let’s say you’re being evaluated for Hufflepuff vs. Slytherin. Perhaps if you answer left and dusk in that context, you would go into Slytherin.
Or maybe, there is the correlation between the Houses in the towers (Gryffindor and Ravenclaw) and the Houses below the first floor (Hufflepuff and Slytherin).
It’s interesting, at any rate. Also the elements for Gryffindor and Ravenclaw are complementary, as are the elements for Slytherin and Hufflepuff. Fire needs air to burn. Water needs earth to flow (though not to storm).
If I had to guess, in your case, CCS, the Hat algortihm had narrowed you down to Ravenclaw and Slytherin. (Based on your answers to the first questions. Obviously I don’t know, but your early answers seem Ravenclaw-y or Slytherin-y). Anyway, thanks for sharing!
Yeah, that’s what I thought too. It seemed to narrow down to Ravenclaw-Slytherin. I’m not sure how much a part the water-based answers had to do with anything (I saw another Slytherin’s answers, and she chose centaurs rather than merpeople).
At any rate, I could see Ravenclaw or Slytherin. I have both intellectual curiosity/independence and ambition for greatness (though not through any means). And it was the Slytherin House History that resonated with me far more than the Ravenclaw House History. So I’d have to say it’s a good fit… though I’d never join Draco’s gang. ;)
Where, oh where is my little lost owl??
>> I’m looking forward to Day 4 getting in, though, because my sister is Day 4 and so is one of my friends.
Awww! I’m glad. No owl yet. I wanna play too.
OwlSun126
Hope you can come play soon! :)
I recently got into Pottermore, and I’ve been playing and I got up to chapter 7 on PS/SS but for some reason, when I go thru the Sorting, they’ll show me the first question and not let me select an answer or advance onward from there ):
Any advice?
Let me ask around and see if I can find an answer for you.
One possibility is a browser problem or a Flash problem. Have you tried a different browser and made sure your Flash is up-to-date? Pottermore will take you back to the place you left off, so you leave the page with no problem.
Anyway, I’ll still see if I can get a specific answer to your question.
How do you unlock the clothing information?
If I recall correctly, you will need to click on Madam Malkin’s – which is one of the shops on the left, a little ways down the street. If your view of the street is anything like mine, it’s the shop that’s kind of jiggling a little bit. I’m pretty sure you’ll have to zoom in – but I’m not sure if you need to zoom in one time or two times. Just try both levels of zoom until it works.
Good luck!
I’m a Day 4. Do you know anybody who registered that day who’ve got their letter yet/
I might know someone in the very first batch or two from that… but not since. My sister is Day 4 as well and still waiting for her letter.
How do I unlock Vernon & Petunia Dursley ? I’ve been hovering around the room a lot of times but nothing highlights :( . Please help!
There are a couple of possibilities here.
1. You could be overlooking something. Vernon and Petunia should unlock when you click on a picture frame on the little table beneath the stairs. I’m not sure what the magnification is. Try zooming once or twice and see if it works.
2. There could be a technical problem. In fact, there was a technical problem when I went through the scene. It didn’t work properly at that time for me or another friend of mine. What I did was just move on to the Trip to the Zoo scene. I played around in there for awhile, and when I went backwards, Petunia and Vernon was unlocked. I reported to the glitch to Pottermore, and a few days later when I went back to the scene, I was able to get the information to unlock properly… though I had already unlocked the information.
Anyway, if you can’t get the picture frame to highlight no matter what magnification you’re on, just move on to the next scene and then come back to see if it has unlocked all by itself.
I hope that helps! Good luck!
When you click the frame u need to click it a few times to zoom in and then the frame glows purple. :D
How did you unlock the Hogwarts School Subjects JKR exclusive extra in Chapter 10, Moment 2? I cant seem to figure it out…
I don’t really remember. But it might have been on the shelf below the windows. Not sure what magnification level. It also might have been on a student desk (or Flitwick’s desk). But I think it was probably on the shelf.
Buuuhhh… I want my email NOW, I’m not a squib… :’(
My son got in on day 3 and has not received an email yet – he did write down the username/password he selected so should he just go try on the site (there is now a log-in place)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated – I tried the “forgot my password” to see if it would generate an email that way, but it did not.
I’m sure they haven’t sent out all the welcome emails yet for Day 3, so he should be fine. I hope he gets his email soon!
I finally got my email, got a wonderful wand and a surprising Slytherin sorting, but… I’m stuck! I suppose it’s a glitch, I can’t move forward from the sorting on, the end of chap 7 is locked and I can’t even see the common room…sigh.
I really hope the Pottermore team gets my beta feedback soon and do something! Argh!
That’s frustrating! Are you able to read the House History from where you are?
If I go to that moment, I see that the Sorting Hat has placed me in Slytherin, and I see “Now let J.K. Rowling tell you about Slytherin…” and an invitation for me to read my welcome message. If I click on the link that asks me to read my welcome message and then go to the bottom of the welcome message, I see another invitation that says “View your Common Room.”
Are you seeing all of that? Are you not able to see or click on the link that says “View your Common Room”?
Basically, I think you may have to click to read the House History (i.e., the Welcome Message) and then click on the link at the bottom of that to view your common room before you can come back to the moment and click through to the next moment. Have you tried that?
this is the same problem im having righti now, basically it all comes up how you say but when i click view your common room it tells me that it is locked :/ annoying
So far I’ve been having a smooth Pottermore experience up until trying to get into my common room. It won’t let me in. It keeps saying that the page is locked. How do you unlock it?
Did you look at the message on your House from J.K. Rowling? At the bottom of that message, there should be a button/link that gets you to your Common Room. I’m not sure, but I think you may be required to open the message and click on that link before you unlock your Common Room.
Good luck!
I’ve tried everything. When I click on the welcome message and then click on the view your common room invitation. But then it says it’s locked :( How do you unlock it?
Sorry, I don’t know. I think this is the point at which you go to
Help > Other > What's next > Need more helpThen use the text area to write Pottermore a note telling them what is going on.
I have done that twice now and both issues were resolved. I can’t say that they will be resolved for you, but they were for me.
Great site!!!!!
I just wanted to know whether you, or anyone else reading this, knew how to catch the Snitch in Chapter 11. I keep placing my mouse over it and nothing happens? Also the whole scene is soft and not in definition. Does this make any diference?
Again, this is an amazing site. I am so glad to have finally found other potter mad people just like me. Has anyone been to the Making of Harry Potter tour in London, really want to go, hopefully the summer will be the time for me!!!
Oh gosh! It’s been since last August when I caught the snitch! But I think you have to zoom in a couple of times and then click on the snitch.
