Pottermore: Day 4 Debrief… and Share Your Pottermore Username!

Wow. That was intense. :)

This is the first time I’ve blogged live during the registration period, and wouldn’t you know that the Magic Quill site would have technical difficulties?

Here’s what we learned today:

They weren’t kidding when they said the clues would start to get easier on Day 4!

  • How many students take part in the Triwizard Tournament during Harry’s fourth year? It’s the same number as the Clue number! (My theory is that the reason they are making the clues easy is that now the books get so much longer).

The pattern of 7 books * number of days/chances remaining holds!

  • As predicted, we needed to multiply by 28. This means that tomorrow’s number will almost certainly be 21.

Pottermore seems to be partnering with a limited number of third party sites.

  • Today, we were supposed to be redirected to the Sony website (again), to click on the Magic Quill (again).

Pottermore does have a backup plan if something goes wrong with the Magic Quill.

  • This is the best news of all. The Magic Quill didn’t work – just as email verification didn’t work very well on Day 1. But this time, the Pottermore team was on top of the situation and quickly started redirecting people who solved the clue to the Congratulations page so that they could register. The Pottermore Tech team even posted information about the problem about 15 minutes into the registration period. I wonder if we’ll learn more about this technical glitch on the Pottermore Insider website this afternoon.

Catching the Magic Quill is fun. But what people really want to do is get registered.  And the Pottermore Tech Team made that possible. So Kudos to them for quick thinking in a high-profile crisis management situation.

So… now that the Day 4 challenge is complete, let’s share some usernames in the Comments thread! I’ll go first. :)

    • Thank you! I picked up on it on Sunday. 49 = 7^2. And then I wondered if the 7^2 = 7 books * 7 days/chances (which was featured so prominently on the Pottermore site).

      I sort of joked to my husband that afternoon that the next clue would multiply by 42… and it did! LOL.

I tried registering my sis this morning when the 4th clue went up and all seemed well up until she click the link to confirm her email address and then it took her to the site but it said that something went wrong. She sent a email to Pottermore but so far she hadn’t heard from them yet. But something tells I will have to help her registered again for clue#5 tomorrow. =/

    Luckily I will be helping a friend through the registration process but I hope this gets cleared up by tomorrow.

      Did your sister try again while registration was still open? I think you can try until you successfully complete registration. I hope she gets through tomorrow!

  11. My first one was RoseAuror87 but for some reason there was an error on the verification email! Good thing registration was still open and I was able to register again for the second time but now I just got SpellLumos57. :p I like the first one better but it’s okay. :)

  12. Oh but now I’m worried because they said that people can’t create multiple accounts right? For the RoseAuror57 email, it says this: Sorry, there was a problem with the registration process. Please try again. Please create a new Pottermore account. This should only take a minute or so.

    So I did and I created a new one but I used the same email ad for both. >_>

  13. My user name is DreamNight! I signed up and everything in the middle of class today and it took me like 5 tries to be successful but it finally worked! I am so glad that it did because none of my friends could get onto it at all.

  15. My username is LightStorm7 I love it because lightstorm=lightning=harry’s scar and 7=#of books! Also, I actually found the Magical Quill..I had the sony site up twice, because the first time i didn’t see it anywhere, so i opened a new tab and put it in again, went back to the first one and it was there. I have no idea where it came from though. I then had to “catch” the quill…I was furiously clicking trying to catch it..I don’t know how I was supposed to, but I guess I did somehow.

      • Down to WalnutDawn and PhoenixBludger, both of which are pretty silly.

        MarauderQueen’s alright, but it sounds too much like an 80′s hair metal band. The other two are just boring.

        • LOL. You’re right! It DOES sound like an 80′s hair metal band. But PhoenixBludger doesn’t seem that boring. I mean, bludgers are pretty exciting actually when you’re trying to dodge them. LOL. Have fun with your final choice! (I’ve got a Phoenix name, by the way).

  25. Yes, she is in! After much searching online including scouring the pottermore site and checking twitter I had heard send an email to Pottermore, but she still hadn’t heard back from them. I then tried just logging in with her username password and it WORKED!

    I also noticed today that Pottermore had even addressed the issue I had although it would have been helpful if they had just stated it earlier. But no worries now. Her username is QuillMoon56 btw. =)

    • Excellent! Yes, some people are now recommending just logging in with username and password to see if it will work. Glad she got in! :)

      I think these glitches are all part of the Beta test. We are breaking their system, and they are finding out where it breaks.

    i got in the second day but since i live in Britain and didn’t know what time the clue would be up so i woke every hour on the hour to make sure and then i found out the clue came up at 10am :\ but at least i got in :D

  31. cindy- have to tell you that so far expecto patronum is the best harry potter blog i have read so far. beautifully and analytically decoded every little bit and presented it in wonderfully simple english. and pottermore?? got in only because of u and ur log!! kudos to u keep up the good work :)

  37. PumpkinFloo :) I think it’s cute, and it reminds me of the Weasleys, since they have bright orange hair and Harry first used Floo powder at the Burrow.

    I really love the “Felicis” and “Potion” usernames!

    I would have loved to be any of these:
    PhoenixFelicis
    PotionNiffler
    HallowPotion

    Haha I love AccioButterbeer but I doubt that’s an option!

    Can’t wait to get sorted and get my wand!

      AccioButterbeer. LOL. I have a friend who actually got PatronusBat… and LOVES it. And yes, I totally can’t wait to get sorted myself. Am I Gryffindor? Am I Ravenclaw? Or… gasp… am I something else?

  38. I love, love, love, my username J.k. had some pretty creative name ideas didn’t she. Rowling is always full of surprises, right when we get all worked up and crying about the last movie and Harry potter coming to an end she comes up with this unique idea so we don’t get too worked up. I’m really looking forward to what this site will turn out to be. J.k. Rowling never seizes to surprise us does she?

    • MoonKnight is very cool!

      What’s great is that she had been quietly working on this while we were all getting worked up over the last movies. Then she reveals Pottermore a few weeks before the final movie! I know that a lot of people breathed a sigh of relief knowing that there really was going to be something to look forward to after the DH2 movie. :)

      I agree that a lot of these usernames are great. And even the ones that don’t work make for great jokes. I think there are going to be a lot of “fake Pottermore username” joke memes floating around on the Internet. There’s already a social group and fanfic at the Chamber of Secrets forum devoted to the “BloodSnitch.” :) Apparently someone actually got BloodSnitch, but the name has really taken on a life of its own):

      • Hmmmmmmm. Yes Your absolutely right about this bloodsnitch thing. It looks and sounds a bit scary. I’m not sure what it could be maybe an amateur writer that got mad at how J.K. was taking care of her writing. Maybe he doesn’t like Rowling, but liked the setting, plot or layout of the book, and wanted to make a new conflict in the story so the books could go on. But I disagree i think the books will only be original if it’s in J.k.’s print. It just seems natural!

        • Well, I know Coldwindblows and Dobson. They were just having fun – with the Bloodsnitch and with fanfiction. I think they thought the word combination was funny and created this mythology around it. Not mad at JKR or anything. Just amusing themselves… and a bunch of other people suffering from Pottermore-induced sleep-deprivation. :)

    • AvisPixie is cute. I’m not sure what House it sounds like! But if it doesn’t sound like a specific House, then yeah it’s probably Hufflepuff. :)

      I wonder if our username choices are part of the sorting.

  40. I hate my user name! Its MirrorGoblet33, sounds very masculine to me hahah xD and I’m a girl so thats not so great! I hope they allow you to change it later on, that would be amazing! Love the blog btw! ;D

EMERGENCY SITUATION: so i made 2 accounts on the same day, and thats cuz i was helping one of my friends make it as well as my own. seems that hers came (the validation mail) and so did mine, and i suppose i validated it, but when i try to log in it wouldnt work and it says the username/password doesnt match. and i had tried the forogt my username and the forogt my password button, but when i tried to log in after copy/ paste, it still didnt work. i dont know why it wont let me. looked back at the validate email and when i reclicked the link it said that there was an error in the registration. anyone know wat happen?
    also my username is DraconisNight and i reallly like it , but cant seem to log in

  43. does any one have nay idea why i couldnt log into my account after i registered and validated on the 5ht day? i even put forgot usernaem and they sent me it, and also i resetted the password 5 times, and when i copy paste it back on to log in it wouldnt let me saying the name and pw doesnt match. help? and i wish it would cuz i love my username, which is DraconisNight <———–sounds like a slytherin

      • oh no i meant on the 5th day after i got everything validated and such, and everyday after that before they took off the sign in button, i couldnt log into my account. its like it dissappeared, but my username and password is there

        • LOL. Well, in her press conference concerning Pottermore, JKR indicated that we only see the Houses from the perspective of her Gryffindor heroes and that the view we get of Slytherin in the books is therefore skewed. She said that it’s not a terrible thing to be sorted into Slytherin.

          At any rate, I was sorted into Slytherin. And no, the Hat didn’t ask me if I hated Muggleborns or wanted to use the Dark Arts or if I was a cut-throat competitor (none of which is even remotely true about me LOL). In fact, in one of my selections, I chose Wisdom over Greatness. So perhaps the true nature of Slytherin is somewhat different than Harry’s childhood perspective on Slytherin – as JKR indicated that it is.

            But I guess if you’re snake-phobic and hate green, maybe Slytherin isn’t for you. ;) But we’ve still got the coolest common room… under the lake… and we can see the Giant Squid and other underwater creatures swishing by!

            Pottermore is sorting on the basis of the true underlying nature of the Houses. JKR wrote the questions.

            Slytherin is the House devoted to Greatness. I think Salazar got a bit confused between pureblood and great, but not all Slytherins throughout the centuries have. In fact, one of the greatest Muggle-protectors ever (not to mention the most famous British Wizard of all time!) was a Slytherin.

            So take that, Gryffindor! LOL.

  54. I got ShieldCat63. I was sorted into Hufflepuff, and at first I hated it because I thought myself as more of a Ravenclaw, but then after reading about what J.K. Rowling had said about Hufflepuff, I now think myself as a Huffie more than a Ravie! I actually thought if I didn’t get Ravenclaw I would get Slytherin because I like tricking people like that.

    • I’m glad you’re happy with Hufflepuff. The Hufflepuff History is pretty cool. I particularly liked the part about the prefect dueling the Ravenclaw over the Puff that the Ravie claimed belonged to Ravenclaw. LOL. I’ve always known that Hufflepuff is not me, but it’s a great House for people who belong in it. :) I work hard, but patience? Not so much. LOL. I thought I would be Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, but when I read the Ravenclaw history, I thought maybe Slytherin instead. So I was happy when I got sorted into Slytherin.
